The American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), founded in 1991, is pleased to announce the election of Dwight E. Heron, MD, MBA, FACRO, FACR as President of the College for 2023-2025. The announcement comes at the conclusion of The Radiation Oncology Summit: ACRO 2023 held recently in Orlando.
Dr. Heron currently serves as System Medical Director for Growth and Innovation for the Oncology Service Line at the Bon Secours Mercy Health System in Youngstown and Lorain, OH. He is also the director of the Radiosurgery Program at Mercy St. Elizabeth-Youngstown where he practices as a radiation oncologist. Dr. Heron specializes in stereotactic radiosurgery and its use in head and neck cancers, central nervous system tumors and the treatment of oligometastatic disease.
Dr. Heron received his medical training at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY and completed his residency at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment, in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Heron went on to receive a Global Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Pittsburgh, Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, in Pittsburgh, PA.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Dr. Heron has been recognized for his work in developing a patient experience program across a large domestic and global integrated radiation oncology network, implementing a robust clinical trials infrastructure including community network sites, major practice acquisitions, and network development of cancer programs worldwide, and integration and expansion of over 35 academic & community oncology programs. As a master educator, he has received numerous awards, authored more than 750 abstract, manuscripts, book chapters, monographs, and editorials.
In his role as ACRO President, Dr. Heron will oversee the College’s strategic initiatives including the administration of the ACRO Accreditation Program, development of the Clinical Pathways project, dynamic educational content, development of innovative communication strategies, and advocating for the advancement of cancer care.
