ACRO is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Maria Chan as Director of Physics for the ACRO Accreditation Program, succeeding Dr. Claudio Sibata, whose leadership has shaped the program for many years.

The Director of Physics provides leadership for the physics components of ACRO Accreditation, including oversight of the Physics Committee, standards development, surveyor training and evaluation of accredited practices. This role is central to ensuring that ACRO Accreditation continues to advance excellence in radiation oncology and high-quality patient care.

“It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I welcome Dr. Chan as the new Physics Director for ACRO Accreditation,” said Dr. Jarek Hepel, Medical Director of ACRO Accreditation. “Throughout her illustrious career, she has been dedicated to promoting quality care and establishing quality standards. Under her leadership, I expect ACRO Accreditation will continue to be the Standard of Excellence.”

Dr. Chan brings extensive experience in clinical practice, research, quality assurance and professional leadership. She earned her PhD in Medical Physics from the Medical College of Ohio and is certified by both the American Board of Medical Physics and the American Board of Radiology. She joined Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1999 and currently serves as Chief Physicist at MSKCC's Basking Ridge, New Jersey, regional site.

Dr. Chan has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and held numerous leadership roles, including Chair of the AAPM Practice Guidelines Subcommittee and an American Board of Radiology oral examiner. She has also served as an ACRO Accreditation Practice Site Surveyor for more than 18 years.

As ACRO welcomes Dr. Chan to her new role, the College also extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Sibata for his exceptional service and leadership. With more than 30 years of experience in radiation oncology physics, research and education, Dr. Sibata has made lasting contributions to the profession and to ACRO Accreditation. His leadership has strengthened the program and supported practices committed to delivering safe, high-quality radiation therapy.

“Dr. Sibata has been the backbone of ACRO Accreditation for more than a decade, ensuring the highest quality physics standards and reviews,” Dr. Hepel said. “I am truly grateful for his tireless dedication and service not only to ACRO but to the field of radiation oncology as a whole.”

As Director of Physics, Dr. Chan is committed to enhancing the rigor, consistency and educational value of the physics review process while further strengthening the visibility, credibility and impact of ACRO Accreditation. ACRO looks forward to working with Dr. Chan as she helps guide the continued growth and success of the accreditation program.
